We are a group of concerned local citizens who are opposed to efforts to close the Salem Harbor Station Power Plant, our last local industrial employer and Salem’s largest taxpayer. We disagree with claims that the operation of the plant is a major risk to our health. To this end we act as a private watchdog group to help ensure that:
We were founded informally by several North Shore and Cape Ann citizens who heard reports of an effort to have the Salem Harbor Power Station shut down due to alleged health problems arising from generating electricity from fossil fuels. Since we all live in the shadow of the plant we became concerned. We looked at the claims that were made then directly approached representatives of the power plant in an attempt to clarify the issues. We subsequently researched environmental performance data from the EPA and DEP as well as information from other environmental sources.
What we found was that the argument about health problems caused by the Salem Harbor Power Plant was unsubstantiated. Much of the “data” and claims were either statistics taken out of context or reports that were not written with Salem Harbor Station in mind. There wasn’t a single claim that could be demonstrated or proven. We could not find any unusually high incidences of health problems that were out of line with communities that are NOT near a power plant such as ours or that could be easily attributed to other causes.
We realized that too much was at stake to allow misinformation to steer public policy so we solicited the help of other local citizens, local government officials, and even some of the people whose very jobs were at stake and formed this alliance.
Our purpose is to get the truth out and preserve an important source of reliable energy for our community. More importantly, we want to preserve almost five million dollars per year in taxes that pay local police, firefighters and teachers; and over one hundred and seventy high paying jobs at the plant itself along with many other jobs and businesses that serve the plant. At the same time we want to make sure that realistic health concerns are addressed by the Plant in a way that keeps the health of our community the high priority that it needs to be.So look at the links on this page to learn what we’ve learned and then please help us SHARE THE FACTS!
